Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies. According to the World Health Organization, anemia affects 25% of the world population, with an even higher prevalence in women and children.   

DESCOTE® FERROUS FUMARATE 60% is a nutritional ingredient containing ferrous fumarate microencapsulated in a lipid matrix, thanks to DESCOTE® proprietary technology. 

The lipid matrix of the DESCOTE® is made of vegetable oil that is now RSPO certified, to ensure a sustainable oil supply.

The lipid matrix of the DESCOTE® range helps solubilization and absorption of poorly soluble actives, such as iron. Indeed, the cell membrane is organized in an hydrophobic lipid bilayer, facilitating the entrance of active substances from matrices of hydrophobic nature, such as the one of DESCOTE®. 
    • Taste masking: Supplements containing iron can bring an unpleasant metallic taste. The vegetable fatty acid matrix of DESCOTE® FERROUS FUMARATE 60% only starts to break down in the acidulous media of the stomach, thus avoiding the unpleasant taste.
    • No teeth-staining: DESCOTE® FERROUS FUMARATE 60% can also be used with chewable forms for which, in addition to taste masking, the lipid matrix prevents teeth-staining and potential color transfer to the oral cavity during mastication, a common problem with minerals.

    On the European market, strong health claims are authorized for dietary supplements that are source of iron*, among which are the following:

    *The claim may be used only for food which is at least a source of iron as referred to in the claim SOURCE OF [NAME OF VITAMIN/S] AND/OR [NAME OF MINERAL/S] as listed in the Annex to Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006.

    Clinical study

    The efficiency of DESCOTE® FERROUS FUMARATE 60% has been investigated in an interventional clinical study, taking place in twenty two villages of Vadu Rural Health Program from KEM Hospital, India. 

    432 children aged between 6 and 18 months were recruited to assess the efficiency of five iron supplements in the treatment of anemia. Selected villages were randomized into 5 groups: 3 groups received DESCOTE® FERROUS FUMARATE 60% in sprinkles (12.5 mg, 20 mg and 30 mg of ferrous fumarate), 1 group received 20 mg of micronized ferric pyrophosphate in sprinkles and 1 group received 20 mg of ferrous glycine sulphate in drops. The supplements also contained Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Folic Acid and Zinc gluconate. 

    The supplement with a dose of 12.5 mg/day of iron from DESCOTE® FERROUS FUMARATE 60% was proven as efficient as higher doses to significantly increase hemoglobin and ferritin after 2 months, with fewer side effects. (Hirve et al. 2007 in Indian Pediatrics)
