Acting for climate

At Seppic, a subsidiary of the Air Liquide group, we are very aware that climate is a major concern for future generations and that we must act to reduce the climate impact of our activities in the short- and medium-term.

Each year, we conduct an assessment of our carbon emissions according to greenhouse gas protocol standards on scopes 1 (emissions directly related to the manufacturing of our ingredients), 2 (indirect emissions related to the energy consumption required to manufacture our ingredients), and 3 (other indirect emissions).

Our carbon emissions on scopes 1 and 2

Scopes 1 and 2 represent direct emissions on which we may act at our plants. The assessment may vary with the integration of new sites, as was the case in 2013 and 2017, with the respective acquisitions of Seppic Pontrieux and Seppic Lons. At constant scope (excluding acquisitions), the assessment for scopes 1 and 2 decreased by 12.5% between 2011 and 2018, while the company experienced significant growth.

At our Castres site, the installation of a condenser downstream from the stack gas cooler at the main steam boiler and the development of a new solution for recovering calories from boiler deconcentration resulted in a 6.1% and 1.1% savings respectively on the site's total gas consumption.

Seppic Pontrieux

At our Pontrieux site, replacing the cooling unit with new, more energy-efficient equipment has reduced the site's annual electricity consumption by 14%. Furthermore, adding a water exchanger for condensation has enabled the calories produced by the cooling unit to be recovered in order to generate 55°C hot water, which is then reused to clean the workshops.

Our carbon emissions on scope 3

Carbon emissions on Scope 3 are indirect. They include inputs to our manufacturing sites - raw materials, packaging - and transport. The transport of goods (freight) can be optimized in the short term with regards to carbon emissions, particularly in downstream freight, as there are several ways we can deliver to our customers: by sea, land, or air. In 2018, freight alone accounted for more than four times of scopes 1 and 2 in terms of carbon emissions at Seppic. Freight optimization is a priority for Seppic.
