SEPPIC committed to sustainable palm oil

SEPPIC is committed to designing specialty ingredients that reduce the impact on deforestation, biodiversity, and climate change. SEPPIC is committed to an action plan and has chosen to deploy the Mass Balance certification proposed by the RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil) for the use of palm oil derivatives.

A commitment on the long term

SEPPIC has been a member of the RSPO since 2010 and supports the transformation of the palm oil industry into a sustainable one. In 2014, SEPPIC initiated an action plan for its own use of palm oil derivatives, with the aim of obtaining 100% of its ingredients certified by 2020 and 100% physically certified by 2025, in line with the commitment it made to the RSPO in 2013.

Concrete achievements

SEPPIC uses palm oil derivatives in its French production sites of Castres and BiotechMarine. Both sites have obtained Mass Balance certification, in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

The sale of Mass Balance certified ingredients began in 2016 and today SEPPIC has 34 Mass Balance certified ingredients. The number is rising steadily, with the first two ingredients being certified Mass Balance in 2016.

The BiotechMarine site, which specializes in extraction and marine biotechnologies, already has 97% Book and Claim certified inputs and, by the end of 2018, the percentage will reach 100%.

Trained teams

At each of the Mass Balance certified sites, a dedicated team - Procurement, Sourcing, and Quality Control - manages the balance of inputs and outputs of raw materials derived from palm oil certified Mass Balance in order to ensure a positive balance in accordance with the requirements of the RSPO Mass Balance standard. This system ensures that equivalent quantities of palm oil from sustainably certified plantations enter the processing chain.

More generally, at the SEPPIC level, more than 120 employees were the recipients of information on the palm oil supply chain and its responsible use in 2017.
