Seppic is committed to a sustainable algae and plant industry

For its sourcing of plants and algae, Seppic aims for continuous improvement of its supply chain in terms of respect for biodiversity, workers and local communities. This is the reason why Seppic Lons (2008) and Seppic Pontrieux (2021) sites are members of the UEBT and are committed to "Sourcing with respect®".

UEBT is an organization that promotes sourcing with respect for all people and biodiversity.

In practical terms, membership of the UEBT demonstrates Seppic's commitment to taking into account issues relating to biodiversity conservation and restoration, cultivation and wild collection practices for the sustainable use of biodiversity, human and workers' rights, and community well-being and local development in its sourcing.

For the past 20 years, the Lons site has been developing a responsible supply chain in Madagascar by implementing collection practices that guarantee that the harvesting, use and trade of wild species are sustainable, thus meeting the challenges of targets 4 and 5 of cop15. In line with cop15 targets 13 and 20, Seppic is committed to benefit-sharing and capacity-building for local partners through the financing of community development projects (schools, hospitals, health programs), technology transfer and research partnerships.

At its Pontrieux site, Seppic favors local, responsible sourcing for its shore seaweed resources. Harvesting on the foreshore is done by hand at low tide by harvesters, and at sea by seaweed harvesters using techniques adapted to each species. These techniques ensure the preservation of the resource. Harvesters and seaweed harvesters are accredited and harvesting is controlled by the French authorities, who issue and manage authorizations and set the harvesting period.

Indeed, our UEBT membership and commitments to ethical sourcing are aligned with the use of sustainable resource management practices, contributing to the harvesting and trade of wild plant species in a way that is safe and compliant with regulations by preventing overexploitation and minimizing impacts on ecosystems.
