Upgrading Existing Formulas Sustainability: How Can Rheology Support Concretely The Reformulation

The consumer holistic conception of sustainability directs us to rethink our formulation habits. From the formulator perspective, this often goes through a revision of the formulation composition to increase the bio-based content. Moreover, anticipation of industrial production leads to using this opportunity to favour cold manufacturing, in order to improve carbon footprint (i.e. reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions). This second approach is especially valuable when big volumes are involved (e.g. body care, hair conditioners). Nowadays, there is a broad choice of ingredients providing good aesthetics and, when working on existing compositions, the challenge is to maintain the formula stability and a similar behavior during use. How to facilitate the approach at the early development stage? Formulation expertise is irreplaceable but can we find some tools to help? The presentation aimed to show that, despite its reputation to be complicated and understandable only by specialists, rheology experiments can be analyzed in a simple manner and provide concrete and useful information to choose the materials and adjust the composition. Two skin and hair formulations, initially requiring a hot process, will be taken as examples.  Rheology measurements related to stability screening and behavior during use, such as spreadability, will be explained as well as their support in the formulation optimization.
