Ingredients for the topical route

Problem-solving excipient for optimized formulations
Ingredients and solutions for the topical route

The topical administration of drugs allows targeted care of dermatological or loco-regional pathologies, or by transdermal route. Dermo-pharmaceutical drugs exist largely in semi-solid forms such as gels, creams, foams, and sprays.

During formulation, the choice of excipients is essential in guaranteeing medication efficacy by solubilizing the active ingredients and optimizing their cutaneous penetration, for the stability of the galenic form and its texture, as well as for therapeutic adherence of the patient.

Seppic offers innovative excipients designed to address formulation issues that other excipient cannot. Their safety of use for cutaneous and mucosal applications is guaranteed by tolerance tests. We also provide Pharmacopeia-compliant excipients meeting Ph. Eur. and USP-NF requirements.

Polymer thickeners, stabilizers, and texturing agents

The use of rheology modifiers in semi-solid formulations ensures stability and a texture adapted to the area of application and the pathology.

Sepineo™ polymers are thickening agents with high performance at pH values between 3 and 12, capable of stabilizing large quantities of solvents and lipophilic phases. Their texturizing power facilitates skin adhesion, spreading, and gives a non-greasy and non-tacky feel for optimal patient therapeutic adherence. They can be used in products for topical, transdermal, vaginal, rectal, and gingival routes of administration.

Emulsifiers and solubilizers

Formulators often face challenges with the bioavailability and solubility of active ingredients. Surfactants may act as solubilizer to achieve a better solubility of the active ingredients or be used as emulsifier to stabilize multiphasic dosage forms.

Due to its non-ionic character and its stabilizing properties for solvents and lipophilic phases at any pH (3 - 11), Sepineo™ SE 68 is a self-emulsifier allowing the formulation of any active ingredient in oil-in-water emulsions. Its conformation provides superior emulsion stability as well as intrinsic hydrating power.

Seppic also provides well-known solubilizers and emulsifiers: polysorbates (Montanox™), sorbitan esters (Montane™), ethoxylated fatty acids and alcohols (Simulsol™), with Ph.Eur. and USP-NF compliance.

TECA™ Pharma, the first extract derived from Centella asiatica for pharmaceutical applications

The first extract of Centella asiatica to serve pharmaceutical applications such as healing and intravenous deficiency, TECA™ Pharma, an active pharmaceutical ingredient, is a titrated extract of Centella asiatica, which has demonstrated its efficacy for 50 years.

Its therapeutic properties are mediated by the stimulation of collagen synthesis by skin fibroblasts, the promotion of angiogenesis, and the remodeling of the extracellular matrix. In topical applications, the extract reduces healing time by 40%.

TECA™ Pharma is Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) part II for active substances certified and holds a European regulatory file (Active Substance Master File, ASMF).

Foaming agents

Foams focus the use of a topical formula on an area to ensure proper penetration of the active ingredient or to act solely on the surface, promoting homogeneity when spreading, and improving texture and feel during application.

Our foaming agents -- non-ionic or amphoteric surfactants -- are used in antiseptic liquid soap formulations. They have low reactivity and preserve antiseptic properties. They are very well tolerated by the skin and mucous membranes.
