Antioxidants & Anti-ageing
Reactive oxygen species are naturally present in cells and have strong oxidizing properties. They play a physiological role but, in excess, they cause damage and premature cell ageing.
Antioxidants, whether produced by cells or ingested in food, are an effective defence system for protecting the body against this damage. Under certain environmental or physiological conditions, body’s antioxidant defences may be insufficient to deal with oxygen species. This is known as oxidative stress.
In such cases, antioxidant defences may be strengthened by increasing the nutritional intake of antioxidants or by stimulating endogenous antioxidant defences.
As well as being used in products with antioxidant and anti-ageing functions, nutritional antioxidants are also used in products with more specific applications, such as skin beauty products. Skin ageing is partly caused by reactive oxygen species (free radicals), species that are overproduced when the skin is exposed to UV rays.
