Challenges of coating

Coating is a basic operation performed at the end of a drug manufacturing process. The operation consists in covering tablets with one or more layers, in order to modify surface of tablets. Five particular advantages to film-coating can be listed:

Adding colour and/or flavour to facilitate treatment compliance
Adding colour and/or flavour to mask characteristics of active ingredients (taste…)
Protecting cores from external stress by creating a physical barrier
Protecting hygroscopic cores from moisture
