Specific functions and applications depend on the number and nature of substitutions grafted to the cellulose (-hydroxypropyl, -methyl, -ethyl):

Film-coating, to add features to surface on tablets, such as colour or protection against moisture
controlled release, to improve the bioavailability of API with sustained/extended release or gastro-resistance
Manufacturing process aids such as anti-capping agent, binder, glidant, carrier…
